Plaza Balcón de Europa, Nerja, Spain
Balcón de Europa
The Balcón de Europa is an iconic viewpoint located in the heart of Nerja, Málaga. It was originally a 9th-century fortress known as the Castillo Bajo de Nerja, which became a strategic defence point in the 16th century. During the War of Independence, the castle was destroyed by the English. In 1885, King Alfonso XII visited Nerja after an earthquake and, impressed by the views, named it the ‘Balcony of Europe’.
Today, it is an idyllic place to enjoy panoramic views of the Mediterranean, surrounded by palm trees and with a lively social scene, thanks to its cafés and street artists. It is also famous for its appearance in the TV series ‘Verano Azul’.

Cueva de Nerja, Carretera de Bajada a Playa de Maro, Spain
Cuevas de Nerja
The Nerja Cave, located in Maro, near Nerja (Málaga), is an impressive geological formation discovered in 1959. It has a total length of almost 5 kilometres and is divided into two main areas: the Lower Galleries, open to the public, and the Upper and New Galleries, reserved for research. Its origin dates back more than 5 million years, formed by a process of karstification in dolomitic marbles in the Sierra Almijara, where water dissolved the rock, creating passages and chambers.
It is famous for its spectacular speleothems (stalactites and stalagmites) and its archaeological importance, as it houses remains of human occupation dating back 30,000 years. Among its most notable chambers are the ‘Cataclysm Chamber’ and the ‘Ghost Chamber’. In addition, the cave provides key information about Quaternary climate evolution in the western Mediterranean.
